Starving Siberian Husky Finds Forever Home After Eating Twigs And Rocks To Survive

I’m Willow. The Siberian Husky was discovered by two Good Samaritans in Maple Ridge, British Columbia, laying by the side of the road. Mathieu Letourneau and Guillaume Lefevre pulled over to assist Willow while other cars passed by. She appeared to be either a coyote, wolf, or a dog at first.

On January 31, 2015, Letourneau characterized the dog’s rescue as “the dog was sitting there simply given up — scarcely moving.” “Willow” simply needed something warm after starving to death.

Then they got her into their car and drove her to the Maple Ridge Society for the Prevention of Animal Cruelty, where they offered her their Subway sandwich (BC SPCA).

The baby Husky had been eating pebbles and mud to remain alive, the veterinarians discovered after examining her.

According to Eileen Drever, a senior animal protection officer for the BC SPCA, “When she initially came in she was unable to lie down due to stomach pain caused by boulders and soil in her gastrointestinal tract.” “There were no food leftovers in her stomach, therefore we believe she was trying to survive by eating gravel.” Eileen feels the dog probably had just another 24 hours to live.

Willow, who is just 2 years old, barely weighed 33 pounds (15 kg) at the time. A Husky at this age would typically weigh 53 pounds (24 kilos). Willow had a score of 1 on the Canine Body Conditioning Scale, which ranges from 1 to 9, with 9 representing ideal health and 1 representing acute malnutrition.

Investigators located Willow’s original owner, a university student in his 20s, following a public plea. Charges in the case have been suggested by the BC SPCA, and the Crown Council prosecutors are currently reviewing the case and deciding whether or not to authorize any charges.

A few weeks after being saved, Willow entered a foster family’s care and started to feel better. She liked taking her foster family on walks. She started reacting to her name and enjoys vehicle journeys, according to her relatives.

Willow has grown 20.5 pounds (9.3 kilograms) after a month and a half and is starting to understand her basic instructions. It’s difficult to keep her out of the water since she likes it so much. She enjoys coming to the river, where she attempts to have a dip no matter how chilly the water is, according to the BC SPCA. So that she doesn’t get too wet and acquire a cold, her foster mother needs to bribe her into coming out with snacks.

The wonderful news that Willow had been adopted by a caring family then surfaced on March 16.

The BC SPCA chose to place Willow with a family that is familiar with the breed, despite the fact that Letourneau and several other people showed interest in adopting Willow. According to Maple Ridge SPCA assistant branch manager Faydra Nichols, “because of her background, she has a variety of behaviors that will need continuing attention by someone with breed knowledge.” We were lucky to locate a family with knowledge of this breed, and they are overjoyed to welcome Willow into their family as a new furry addition.
