Nursing dogs have several responsibilities to ensure that their litter of puppies are well-nourished, maintained, and cared for.
Imagine a homeless dog mother doing her best to keep her puppies alive, but she has no one to support her and is unexpectedly involved in a horrible accident. This is precisely what happened to a new dog mother in Kota Kinablalu, Malaysia, who was caught on a fishing hook.
Helping Pet’s Rescue Team (HART) reports that a nice Samaritan found a lactating dog with a fishing hook and lure hooked to her lower lip. Despite the discomfort she should have been experiencing, the devoted mother never faltered in her care for her famished infants. The nice Samaritan contacted multiple rescuers for assistance, but no one responded until HART.
“We immediately hurry out to assist in removing the hooks and provide her with relief,” HART wrote on Facebook. “By the time we arrived, she was thirsty, exhausted, yelping in pain, and obviously suffering. Without our assistance, her agony would have been considerably worse.”
They named the dog Dakota and discovered that she continued to nurse her five puppies with diligence. She had been entangled in the fishing hook and lure for several days without food or water. The rescue group reported that she is healing well and continues to care for her young after the hook and lure were removed.
