A police officer discovers a 10-week-old puppy in a box on the side of the road.

The temperature was 87 degrees Fahrenheit on the day Deputy Earl Hanners found the dog.

Hanners was on the scene of a car accident in Atlanta, Georgia, when he overheard an unexpected call on the dispatch radio. Someone discovered a 10-week-old puppy inside a box left on the side of the road.

“She was in a cardboard box that was sealed up,” Hanners explained. “A passerby noticed the box and came to a halt when he noticed there was a dog inside.” So he opened the box, set it on the side, went to get some water for it, and then dialed 911.”

Because Hanners was involved in the car accident, another officer went to check on the dog and ended up phoning animal control. However, as soon as Hanners could, he went to help the puppy himself.

“I instructed him… to cancel animal control,” Hanners explained. “I’m going to take the puppy to the vet and get her checked out.”

Hanners arrived to find the puppy still lying by the crate, overheated and dehydrated.

Hanners lifted the dog, whom he called Bridget, into his patrol car. Then he went back home.

“After we got her on the back porch, I phoned my vet’s office and informed them what I had,” Hanners explained. “I gave her water and food and simply let her kick back, rest, and recover from the heat.” She drank three or four bowls of water and ate three or four bowls of food.”

Hanners immediately recognized he didn’t want to let go of her — instead of finding her a home, he decided to give Bridget one himself.

Bridget isn’t Hanners’ first rescue dog; he also owns eight rescue pugs and fosters dogs for a local rescue organization called Hounds in Pounds.

But, before introducing Bridget to the other canines, Hanners made sure she had been completely checked and vaccinated. Hanners also secluded Bridget for ten days to be extra safe.

But the other dogs couldn’t wait to meet Bridget, and when they did, they got along great, according to Hanners.

Hanners explained, “We just introduced her to the other dogs in the home last night.” “It only takes a day or two of observation and they fit perfectly in.”

Unfortunately, no one has been arrested for dumping Bridget inside the cardboard box, and the first investigation was unsuccessful. Bridget, on the other hand, is alive and well, and she’s found the right family that will adore her forever.

“She simply likes cuddling,” Hanners explained. “She adores my grandkids.” She’s just a really lovely and caring dog.”
